Event information Following the EU referendum, growth in UK manufacturing has been one of the few bright spots in the UK economy. But manufacturing businesses face a looming strategic challenge to the bottom line – the ability to recruit, retain and train their workforces. The revenue investment in this aspect of the business is very significant in most companies and the competitive implications of getting the investment right are critical. So FDs and CEOs must take a leading role in collaboration with HR professionals. Brexit will magnify recruitment and retention threats. The supply of young, economically active and trained workers is already beginning to slow. Any changes to freedom of movement rules following exit negotiations will intensify challenges, negatively impacting all areas of UK manufacturers businesses. And manufacturers already face considerable threats to the bottom line from these factors too: Demographic challenges. The average age of UK manufacturing staff has climbed. It is not uncommon for the over-40s to dominate the workforce. With many looking for a better work/life balance, strategies must be developed to support flexible working and phased departures to encourage retention beyond retirement age. The introduction of the apprenticeship levy. At present accessing the funding available is something of a minefield. Large companies who pay the levy and small companies who want to access the funds are suffering equally and it is restricting training budgets as a result. Changing the perception of manufacturing. The sector has often failed to promote itself as a dynamic and modern environment to work in. Communicating the role of digital advances in manufacturing, such as robotics, as well as product innovations are key to changing the negative perceptions of potential younger recruits. So how can you navigate through these problems? Our manufacturing industry experts will provide advice and guidance to help you maximise your return on HR investment, and the event will also provide you with an opportunity to share and learn from the experiences of other manufacturing companies. As usual with our business members events there will be plenty of opportunity for networking with other delegates and learning from each other’s experiences, as well as a Q&A session with our speakers.
Come and see one of Europe’s most advanced truck assembly facilities, and talk to the people who make it a success, during our upcoming OpEx in Action workshop at Leyland Trucks. Our OpEx in Action workshops are perfect for anyone who has already attended one of our Shingo Discover workshops and are keen to refresh or deepen their understanding of how the Shingo Model can be applied in a real working environment. The workshop includes three extensive Gemba walks which will be assessed against the principles of the Shingo Model - Culture, Continuous Improvement and Enterprise Alignment. Following the Gemba walks delegates will be required to feedback their observations focused around strengths and opportunities to the senior management team on site who are always keen for visitors to steal their best ideas and improvements ‘with pride.’ Leyland Trucks, a wholly-owned subsidiary of PACCAR Inc., employs 800 people and the company’s future development is focused on the use of leading edge applications of information technology in all aspects of truck design, manufacture, procurement and logistics. Delegates will also be able to see how Leyland’s EWI works – electronic work instructions in a paperless environment – and learn more about Leyland’s lean journey and cultural change. The OpEx in action workshop at Leyland Trucks is on 28th March 2018 coating £395 per delegate .
The Workshop: ENABLE builds upon the knowledge and experience gained at the DISCOVER EXCELLENCE workshop and takes you deeper into the Shingo Model™ by focusing on the principles identified as Cultural Enablers: Respect Every Individual Lead with Humility Cultural enablers make it possible for people within the organization to engage in the transformation journey, progress in their understanding and, ultimately, build a culture of enterprise excellence. Enterprise excellence cannot be achieved through top-down directives or piecemeal implementation of tools. It requires a widespread commitment throughout the organization to execute according to the principles of enterprise excellence. The Host Site Our Shingo Cultural Enablers workshop at world-leading global medical devices company Boston Scientific in Cork, Ireland, is an essential follow-up to our ever-popular Shingo Discover workshops. Over two days delegates will look at the cultural enablers of the Shingo model – which are ‘Respect for Every Individual’ and ‘Lead with Humility’ – and take a much deeper dive in to why they are so important. Delegates will also enjoy an extended Go, Look, See around Boston Scientific which has been on a lean journey for the last 21 years and won the Shingo Prize in 2016. The 30 acre Cork site, which has 890 employees, manufactures a diversified portfolio of medical devices for distribution across the globe. The team there produce 5.7m devices a year including catheters, occlusion coils and microspheres, inflation devices and atherectomy devices, which positively impact seven lives every minute. The cost per delegate for the Cultural Enablers workshop on March 13th and 14th is £950 with discounts for multiple bookings.
